Mermaid Mayhem (Misty Hollow, Book 1) HP Mallory & JR Rain

Great start to a new series

I enjoyed this book. I’ve read the Haven Hollow series by the same authors and honestly, I was expecting more of the same, however this Hollow seems to be a little different. For a start, it's still under construction and it's owned by a vampire.

The characters are fun and different. There is the potential for romance but none in this book. I like that although we are in another Hollow, the setting is so far removed from Haven Hollow that it couldn't possibly be compared.

I was pleasantly surprised to find the main character is not just a mermaid living in a hot swamp, she’s a siren with a difficult past and needs a safe place to be. She’s also a private investigator who has been called in to investigate the disappearance of three key members of the unfinished Hollow. No spoilers here but the perp wasn’t the obvious suspect and that made me happy. The ending also had a wonderfully creepy feel and that made me even happier.

I’m looking forward to the next book now.

The Dragon Protector (Dragon's Birthright, Book 2) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

Absolute page turner for me.

I really enjoyed this book. The characters have developed really well since the first book. Those who had seemed a mystery in book one are being revealed for who they are. Not everyone is who they say they are, or even who we wish them to be. The world building continued to be excellent and best of all, there were many more Dragons!

Like the first book, this was an absolute page turner for me. I love the politics, the warmongers, the dragons, the fight for survival and even the possibility of love, which may or may not be fulfilled.

Excellent series so far. I can’t wait for book three.

Reading order so far:

Book 1, The Good Daughter

Book 2, The Dragon Protector

Dance with the Dead (Gwen's Ghosts, Book 1) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

Exciting start to a new PWF series

I really enjoyed this book. It’s the first in a new PWF novella series. It has a wonderfully spooky aspect and a female MC who is a mystery novelist turned amateur investigator with a best friend who is a centuries-old ghost.

Gwen is a 42 year old woman whose life needs a kickstart after the end of her long term relationship. She decides to make a clean break, leave the USA and head for England, where she returns to the small village of Morley-on-Avon in the West Country; the place where as a child she had visited whilst on holiday and met Petra, a centuries-old ghost who has remained by her side ever since. The small cottage Gwen buys has a history; its previous owner died suddenly in an accident in the cottage. After seeing an apparition of the former owner, Gwen decides she has to investigate.

This is a fun book. I immediately liked Gwen and her prim Victorian ghostly sidekick. It feels a bit like a murder-mystery crossed with an English drama. The ending was unexpected, so I think there might be many a twist and turn before we get to the culmination of this tale. I’m quite excited to see what comes next.

Blood Bond (Haven Hollow, Book 27) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

This story arc has sparked new life into this series and I love it.

This is the 27th book in the Haven Hollow series. Most of the series falls in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre, however this one is an Academy book with a twist.

I really enjoyed this book. I love the way this series is going at the moment. There are plot twists and turns and we get to see much more of characters who were previously less in the spotlight. It was as much of a page turner as the previous book.

Like the previous book, this one is set outside of Haven Hollow. This time most of the story is from Maverick’s point of view. It gives a chance to see the relationship between him and his sister, Astrid, as well as his feelings for Tally. I feel that I now know him far better and he’s not just Wanda’s cousin or Astrid’s brother.

This book has more exposure to the wider world of magic and the fae, as well as confirmation of both Maverick’s and Astrid’s lineage.

I am really looking forward to reading the next book. This story arc has sparked new life into this series and I love it.

Gut Rot and Gargoyles (Trailer Park Vampire, Book 3) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

Something weirder than usual is going on in Windy Ridge. I love this series.

Each book just gets better than the last. It’s wonderfully outlandish and strange and I love it. Gut Rot and Gargoyles is the third book in this series set in the small town of Windy Ridge, middle of nowhere, USA.

I’ve said in previous reviews that it’s hard to categorise this book. It’s listed as Paranormal Women’s Fiction but it’s not like any other PWF book I’ve read. It’s definitely Paranormal and there is still the potential for a complicated romance but it hasn’t happened yet; although I suspect there will be more on that in the next book.

The story is set way out in the sticks and everyone is something outside of ‘normal’; there are only three humans in this town of supernaturals. The characters are all unique and quirky, there has been excellent character development over the last three books and I love the world building.

The story arc in this book is hilarious and unusual; weird even for Windy Ridge. I laughed a lot reading it. That said, there is also a deeper message of love, community connection and the importance of good communication.

The reading order for this series is as follows:

Shotguns and Shifters, Book 1

Hillbillies and Hellhounds, Book 2

Gut Rot and Gargoyles, Book 3

Ironclad (Raven Cursed, Book 6) - McKenzie Hunter

Enraged Elves, Furious Fae, Vindictive Vampires. All in a day’s work for Erin.

I loved this book. I have read everything else this author has published and this is by far my favourite series of hers. I love the characters; they are so relatable and the character development since book one for all the characters has been outstanding. The world building, the magic, the action; all of it is superb.

McKenzie Hunter has such a fluid style of writing. I flew through this in a day. The story was well-paced and engaging. Like the others in this series, this book started with a bang and ended with another. I had thought maybe it was wrapping up and Erin, our fabulous FMC, was finally going to get a bit of stability and maybe a Happy Ever After. Not so. There’s a beautiful big shiny hook at the end to reel us all in for book seven. I really cannot wait to read it.

I’m off to nurse my book hangover with a cuppa.

This is the sixth book in McKenzie Hunter’s Raven Cursed series. It’s an Urban Fantasy set in modern day USA. There is some romance but it’s not the main focus of the story. There are some scenes of a sexual nature between consenting adults.

If you haven’t read the rest of the series, please do yourself a massive favour and grab them. The reading order for this series so far is:

Book 1 Fireborne

Book 2 Silverfall

Book 3 Nightsoul

Book 4 Shadowmark

Book 5 Hellcrossed

Book 6 Ironclad
