God of War (Gates of the Underworld, Book 4) - Mallory Rain

Dilemma! Are You Team Adonis or Team Ares?

Each of these books is better than the previous one. The story is fast-paced and gripping. I love the world building in this story. The fourth gate is brutal and much more punishing than the three before it. Penelope has to fight for her life like never before. The sexual tension between Penelope and Adonis remains strong but unfulfilled through this book.

We also see a bit more of Ares than just the vengeful and angry god, and we learn the truth of his past. After meeting Ares in a vision, Penelope finds herself strangely drawn to him and to be honest, so do I. I want this to be a ‘Why Choose?’ situation but I have a feeling that neither Ares nor Adonis are the sharing kind. So I’m left with ⧣TeamAdonis or ⧣TeamAres. I don’t want to choose but I am rooting for ⧣TeamAres at the moment.

This is the fourth book in this Paranormal Romance Greek Mythology series, from authors HP Mallory and JR Rain writing as Mallory Rain. As the genre would suggest, this series is set in the Greek underworld and is filled with duplicitous and selfish gods and goddesses.

Roll on book 5!

Bad Hair Day (Ever Dark Academy, Book 4) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

A Dreadful Reckoning

This is the fourth and final book in the Ever Dark Academy series. The book falls in the Young Adult genre. There is some romance and some sexual tension but no scenes of a sexual nature.

I've enjoyed this series. If it hadn’t been written as a Young Adult series, it could have potentially been a Reverse Harem series. Everly’s feelings for Jean-Claude, Harlow, Riven and Griim are as confusing for her as they are for them.

Everly survived the battle between Dread and Arcadia but the same can’t be said for all of her friends. In the midst of her grief, she comes upon a solution which allows her to read Dorian’s journal and uncover the grisly truth which Arcadia has been keeping secret for centuries. To keep Dread safe, she needs to let that secret be known to all. Will the price be too high though?

If you like the Young Adult and academy genres, you will enjoy this series.

Daughter of Aphrodite (Gates of the Underworld, Book 3) - Mallory Rain

Beware the Fog and the Wraiths of Wrath

I loved this book. I couldn’t put it down. The story moves at a faster pace than the previous two books. It’s full of nightmare wraiths and angry usurpers, and loaded with sexual tension between Penelope and Adonis.

I love the world building in this story. How every gate of the Underworld is vastly different from the one preceding it. How every Fallen who has usurped the role of ruler of each gate has forced their own stamp onto the twisted nightmare they created for the lost souls traversing them.

This is the third book in this Paranormal Romance Greek Mythology series, from authors HP Mallory and JR Rain writing as Mallory Rain. As the genre would suggest, this series is set in the Greek underworld and is filled with duplicitous and vengeful gods and goddesses.

I am off to dive straight into the next installment.

Relics of Ruin (Gates of the Underworld, Book 2) - Mallory Rain

Penelope versus the Underworld. What could possibly go wrong?

I raced through this book. I really enjoyed it. It’s full of action, battles and sexual tension. I love the world building in this story. It’s good to see a new take on the Greek Underworld.

This is the second book in this Paranormal Romance Greek Mythology series, from authors HP Mallory and JR Rain writing as Mallory Rain. As the genre would suggest, this series is set in the Greek underworld and is filled with duplicitous and vengeful gods and goddesses. There are descriptive scenes of a sexual nature. There are also descriptive fight and battle scenes.

Penelope, the 250 year old daughter of Aphrodite, is a demigoddess known for her beauty. She’s not a natural fighter at all, so continuing her mission through five gates of the Underworld to rescue the soul of the woman she considers to be her sister seems like a fool’s errand. She could actually die here herself. Or she could learn to fight and overcome her obstacles.

In order to get to the second gate, she must first vanquish the usurper, Azrhea, and return the first gate to its original ruler. Easier said than done.

If you love Greek mythology and enjoy a good romance in the context of that setting, this is a series you should read.

The Man With The Violet Eyes (Crown of Lies, Book 1) - Mallory Rain

Absolutely Brilliant Start To This Historical Fantasy Romance

I was glued to this book from the first page and I could not put it down. It’s one of those books that felt like it ended too soon because I was so immersed in it. There is action, fighting, political intrigue and a lot of sexual tension.

I’m not usually one for historical romances but this is not your run of the mill historical romance. The characters are well thought out. The worldbuilding is great and the story so believable that I didn’t want it to end. I can’t wait for book two.

This is the first book in a new Historical Fantasy Romance series from HP Mallory and JR Rain writing as Mallory Rain. The book is set in a fantasy realm in the Kingdom of Woodfall Gath.

Charlotte appears to be your average, everyday maid. She’s recently started working at the castle kitchens and manages to get herself in the position of serving the prince and his protector, Nicolo. Charlotte is no maid though. She’s a highly trained Guild assassin and her mark is Nicolo, a man who has spent his life as a target for assassins and who is notoriously hard to kill. She’ll have to get very close to him and gain his trust to even stand a chance.

Nicolo has something mysterious about him; more than his unusual appearance and violet eyes which had led to him and his mother being shunned and ousted from their village. As a child, a chance encounter with passing royalty sealed his fate. Young Nicolo’s mere presence appeared to have the power to heal the ailing young prince, who was next in line for the throne. Nicolo was stolen from his mother and forced to remain by the prince’s side as his childhood companion, then later as his protector.

All is not well in the kingdom of Woodfall Gath. The prince is widely unpopular. He has grown up to be a womanising drunk and no-one wants him to succeed the throne. He has many enemies and the surest way to get to him is through Nicolo. Can Charlotte succeed where so many others have failed?

Day Dream (Haven Hollow, Book 21) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

A Nightmare in Haven Hollow

This is the 21st book in the Haven Hollow series. It is a collaboration between HP Mallory and JR Rain. The book falls in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre.

This series keeps getting better and better. I love the characters and the world of Haven Hollow.

This novella introduces new characters to the Hollow. Syd is still coming to terms with his wife’s passing. Moving to Haven Hollow and setting up his new business seems like the way to go.

Sandman Syd’s is the new retail outlet for all things mattress and sleep related. Regular readers won’t be surprised to hear that Sandman is also his occupation and it’s his job to keep the nightmares at bay. He’s arrived just in time; citizens of the hollow are being plagued by a particularly vicious nightmare which is intent on breaking through the veil into the Hollow.

Syd needs some help, both with his mattress business and his occupational hazards. In comes Bailey Bennet, a psychic from the Spook Society, who is drawn to his business and might just end up becoming more than his assistant.

The Haven Hollow series is written from a variety of points of view and features stories from Wanda’s Witchery, Poppy’s Potions, Spook Society, Haven Homes and Remarkable Remedies. They all run in parallel with each other. The reading order so far is:

Angora Alchemy (Haven Hollow, Book 20) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

Dark Explosive Magic and the Threat of War Comes to Haven Hollow

This is the 20th book in the Haven Hollow series. It is a collaboration between HP Mallory and JR Rain. The book falls in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre.

This is my favourite Haven Hollow book yet. Wanda is changing again. She’s no longer a Blood Witch and her original bond with Lorcan has been broken but something else is happening; a new bond is forming at a much deeper level and Wanda herself is physically changing. Into what? She has no idea.

This book has a lot going on. Maverick’s new Blood Warlock powers combined with Wanda’s magic in an explosive fashion, resulting in an anomaly which cannot be ignored or hidden. There is an escalation in tension between the Portland Vampire Clan and Haven Hollow’s Scapegrace Coven, which if allowed to continue, could lead to a fourth Blood War between Vampires and Witches. Wanda is forced into an unenviable position where she might have to sacrifice herself to save her family and friends.

The Haven Hollow series is written from a variety of points of view and features stories from Wanda’s Witchery, Poppy’s Potions, Spook Society, Haven Homes and Remarkable Remedies. They all run in parallel with each other. The reading order so far is:

Colonial Corpses (Haven Hollow, Book 19) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

A Murder, A Secret Told and a Spell Broken.

This is the 19th book in the Haven Hollow series. It is a collaboration between HP Mallory and JR Rain. The book falls in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre.

I really enjoy this series. The books are the ideal length for an evening with your feet up. I love the easy writing style of the authors and its so easy to get pulled into the ever expanding world of Haven Hollow.

This story is told from Fifi’s perspective. The resident succubus is still in a quandary over her relationship with Roy. It’s causing her to make some odd decisions. Her inner succubus is starving and it's not helping matters much.

The murder of a new resident supernatural sparks a series of events, starting with Fifi deciding to reveal a secret to someone months ahead of schedule and that resulting in the unravelling of a spell which had been designed to keep that person safe. What follows is the potential for catastrophe; Fifi trying to right her wrongs, keep her business going and sort out her love life once and for all.

If you haven’t read any of this series so far, I’d recommend them. They are easy to read, entertaining and feature a host of interesting characters who I find myself quite invested in.

Freed in Love (Nora Moss Series, Book 3) - Zoe Ashwood

The action-packed conclusion to this tale of witches and sea dragons

This is the third and final book in the Nora Moss Series, a Paranormal Romance and Reverse Harem series. The book is primarily set in Greece and has very descriptive scenes of sexual interactions between all four of the main characters; three males and a female.

Nora Moss is a witch who feels that magical knowledge should be shared with all witches and not just held by a select few covens. Her mission is to access the extensive secret libraries of the Scottish Coven by entering their annual magical treasure hunt. All is not what it seems, however. Secrets are revealed and Nora’s mission to have knowledge shared amongst all witches will either succeed or fail spectacularly, ending in tragedy.

My wish at the end of book two was that the trio become a full harem and I’m delighted to say, I got my wish.

This wonderful world of Witches and Sea Dragons is one I like to get lost in. Sadly, I have a feeling this might be the last time we are brought to this place. I hope that’s not the case though.

I really enjoy Zoe Ashwood’s writing style and story telling. The stories are well paced and beautifully described. The characters are relatable and develop well throughout the book.

If you’ve read Zoe Ashwood’s other two series (Sea Dragons of Amber Bay and Norse Sea Dragons), you’ll be familiar with this world of Witches and Sea Dragons. This new series runs parallel to those.

Dissent (A Charity Anthology)

Her Orc Mate, a short story by Zoe Ashwood

This review is specifically for Her Orc Mate, a short story by Zoe Ashwood published in the first volume of this charity anthology.

This is the story of Rose, a human woman, and Uram, an Orc warrior male. Rose lives a life of travelling from place to place, finding shelter and work where she can. Uram recognises her as his fated mate and defends her honour against the drunken human males who frequent the bar she works in. When Rose is fired from her job over the incident, Uram takes her on a journey to his homeland, where she can be safe.

This is a short love story with a happy ever after. After reading it, I wanted to know more. Fortunately, Her Orc Mate is a short introduction to the world of humans and orcs featured in Zoe Ashwood’s new monster romance series, The Black Bear Clan. If you like monster romance and unusual pairings, this is the series for you.

DISSENT is a charity romance anthology with NEW, never before published content from 150 authors of all romance genres. All proceeds from the eBook and paperbacks will be donated to organizations benefiting reproductive rights in the United States, particularly in areas where people need them more than ever.

Wrath of the Gods (Gates of the Underworld, Book 1) - Mallory Rain

Gods and Monsters of the Greek Underworld. Excellent start to a new series.

This is the first book in a new Greek Mythology Romance series, from authors HP Mallory and JR Rain writing as Mallory Rain. As the genre would suggest, this series is set in the Greek underworld and is filled with angry, vengeful gods and goddesses. There are descriptive scenes of a sexual nature as well as of imprisonment.

Penelope is a 250 year old demigoddess, daughter of Aphrodite and currently stuck living on the mortal plane. When the woman she considers her sister (a mortal descendant of her human father’s family line) is killed and her soul taken by Ares, Penelope vows to head to the underworld and rescue her. If only it were that simple.

So begins Penelope’s journey through the various gates of the underworld, looking for Janie’s soul. She’s on a strict time limit and who knows how time passes in the underworld compared with the mortal plane.

Naturally, all does not go to plan. The underworld is bleak and unforgiving. Even a demigoddess can perish here. Her chances of surviving are not great, much less her chances of passing through all the gates in time.

I really enjoyed this book. The writing is good, the worldbuilding is interesting and I think this story has a lot of potential. The book ends on a cliffhanger and just makes me want to dive headfirst into book two.

Author’s Blurb

Why does Ares, the god of war, want me dead?

Cameras, makeup, hair, designer clothing…

In the mortal world, I am my beauty. No one sees beyond it. And it’s been that way for the last 250 years.

Day in and day out—the same. Until my sister, Janie, dies.

With my world newly shattered, I turn to the only person powerful enough to do something about it—my mother, the goddess Aphrodite… Who happens to be kind of a bitch.

Regardless, good ol’ Mom informs me that Janie’s soul has been captured by the most hated of the gods, Ares. And he’s keeping Janie hostage in the deepest level of the underworld, the Fifth Gate.

Determined to rescue Janie and with Aphrodite’s ‘blessing’, I travel to the First Gate, the entry point to the Underworld, a hellscape of exploding volcanoes, ashy air and death as far as the eye can see.

Yeah, it’s no Club Med.

Anyway, it’s here I meet the famed Adonis who, in case you were wondering, definitely lives up to his legendary hotness. Unfortunately for him, though, he’s playing sex slave to the power-hungry Queen Azhrea, the ruler of the First Gate (who incidentally insists he wear only a loincloth).

Man-thongs aside, it isn’t long before Azhrea’s army captures me and delivers me to General Adonis. Now imprisoned, I’m at his mercy. And although it seems like Adonis wants to help me, I’m not sure I can trust him because Azhrea’s influence might be too strong.

And even if I’m lucky enough to escape Azhrea and the First Gate, how am I supposed to survive the next four? Not to mention the final face-off with Ares, who wants my head on a silver platter, owing to the hatred he harbors for my mother.

What’s that old phrase about the ‘sins of the parent being visited on the children’?

Yeah, touché.

This newest entry in the world of Greek mythic romance will grip you with plenty of sexy gods, multiple POVs, a kick-ass heroine, magic, mystery and danger.

Druid's Curse (Haven Hollow, Book 18) - HP Mallory & JR Rain

A new type of magic comes to Haven Hollow.

This is the 18th book in the Haven Hollow series. It is a collaboration between HP Mallory and JR Rain. The book falls in the Paranormal Women’s Fiction genre.

I really enjoyed this book. I like the way this story is going. It feels a little different from the previous books in the series. This story mainly focuses on Finn, Poppy’s teenage son. We previously thought that as a male in the Gypsy line, Finn’s magical talents would be minimal, which is normal for Gypsies. Not in Finn’s case. It turns out that he does have magic and this story begins the exploration into what his magic can do.

We are also introduced to Alixandre, the mysterious stranger who helped Poppy pull away from the brink of death after she was attacked by the rogue vampire, Roscoe. Not only does Alixandre have the same type of magical ability as Finn, there is also a strong connection between him and Poppy. I hope we see more of his character in future books.

I love this series. I love the world that the authors have built and that we get to see this through the eyes and the lives of many different characters.

The reading order so far is:

Gypsy Magic : Poppy’s Potions (Haven Hollow, Book 1)

Cashmere Curses : Wanda’s Witchery (Haven Hollow, Book 2)

Faery Enchantment : Poppy’s Potions (Haven Hollow, Book 3)

Spandex Sorcery : Wanda’s Witchery (Haven Hollow, Book 4)

Her Orc King (Black Bear Clan, Book 1) - Zoe Ashwood

Steamy Monster Romance With A Happy Ever After

This was a fun book. Zoe Ashwood has an easy to read writing style, which flows beautifully. I've read several of her other books and I've enjoyed them all.

I raced through this book in one evening. It is filled with all the things you want in a romance novel; a little conflict, a little danger along the way, a lot of steam and the story ends with a happy ever after.

It’s the first book in a new paranormal monster romance series. The story is set in a fantasy world of Orcs and humans. There are descriptive scenes of a sexual nature between consenting adults. The worldbuilding is great and the characters are relatable.

If you like Monster Romance with a determined and independent FMC, then this is the book for you.

Author’s Blurb

Captured by slavers, sold at auction to brutal orcs, and dragged halfway across the realm…

I never thought I’d say this, but being kidnapped by a band of pillaging bandits wasn’t the low point of my life.

No, that came when a massive, scarred orc king decided I was his mate and refused to let me leave his cave.

Orcs are a vile race without a shred of propriety, and their king is the worst of all - he expects me to accept their wicked ways and doesn’t understand that my thoughts scatter whenever he removes his shirt. He insists on taking care of me - both my body and soul - and won’t take no for an answer.

But trouble brews in this remote kingdom. The orcs are keeping secrets, and I want to learn the truth. And I’m no longer certain I want to return to the human world. Maybe I want to stay right here, in King Gorvor’s arms.

Her Orc King is an orc fantasy romance with a big, scarred hero who falls hard for the stubborn human heroine. You’ll love it if you enjoy your books with a hint of kidnapping, size difference issues, and lots of steamy scenes. This is the first book of a series of standalones - each book can be read separately and features a happily-ever-after ending for that couple.
