A Ghostly Guardian (Midlife Mysteries, Book 1) - HP Mallory

Interesting start to a new PWF series

This is the first in a new Paranormal Women's Fiction novella series from HP Mallory. It’s set in Victorian London, UK and features a widowed FMC and a very pretty but grumpy Inspector from Scotland Yard (The Met Police).

It was a quick read, perfect for an evening in. There wasn’t much in the way of ghostly apparitions in this first book but I am hopeful for more as further books are published in this series..

Phillipa Fairfax is the American daughter of a famous explorer and is wealthy in her own right. Following the death of Patrick Fairfax, her English policeman husband who’s life was cut short by tuberculosis, she retreats to Paris for a year to mourn him. Upon her return, she finds that her adult stepson has called for her arrest, accusing her of theft and she ends up in a cell at Scotland Yard, where she meets the surly Inspector Grant Stirling.

Stirling is torn. On the one hand, he wants to protect the widowed wife of his former supervisor and mentor. On the other hand he has to uphold the law and there’s no evidence to prove Phillipa’s innocence.

Until Patrick’s ghost appears to Phillipa, telling her where to find the evidence she needs… and Grant Stirling finds it exactly where it was meant to be.

All is not well in London’s high society. Poison Pen letters are being received which could spell disaster for some members of the aristocracy. Phillipa could be a way in for Grant to investigate.

I raced through this novella. It was a good introduction to the concept of this world. I enjoyed the English setting and the grumpy Scottish Inspector and I’m looking forward to reading more.
